What happens when a Norwegian design classic meets a material shaped by the Norwegian landscape?

The collaboration between Matre and Lundhs Real Stone brings together two parts of the same story: Norwegian furniture design and Norwegian natural stone.

Together, we have given Sigurd Resell’s Tube Sofa Table and Tube Side Table, originally designed in 1971, a new material expression with tabletops made from natural stone by Lundhs Real Stone.

The result is a meeting between Resell’s light and precise steel construction and the weight, depth and natural variation of stone.

A new material expression for a familiar form

The Tube tables were originally designed with clear glass tabletops. Their simple construction and precise geometry are characteristic of Resell’s approach to furniture design.

With natural stone, the tables take on a different expression.

The stone adds weight and tactility to the otherwise light construction, while each slab has its own natural pattern and character. The design itself remains unchanged — but the material gives it a new identity.

From Norwegian landscape to Norwegian furniture

Lundhs Real Stone extracts and processes natural stone in Norway. For Matre, bringing this material into the collection felt like a natural continuation of our approach to Norwegian design and production.

For us, the story behind a piece of furniture is part of the product itself. Where it is designed, where its materials come from and where it is made all contribute to the whole.

With the Tube tables, these elements come together in one product: a design from 1971, a material shaped over millions of years, and Norwegian production today.

Natural stone is a material with a strong physical presence. Durable and tactile, it develops its own character through use over time.

Paired with Resell’s enduring design, the Tube tables take on a new material identity while retaining the qualities that made the design relevant in the first place.
