About us

Matre is born from a passion for all things Norwegian—our cultural heritage and design traditions. A tradition many are unfamiliar with, yet one that lies hidden like a well-preserved treasure, ready to be rediscovered. Once, the furniture industry in Norway flourished, with remarkable designs proudly exported abroad. We believe we can help revive that golden era and aim to be an active participant in rebuilding an industry that has unfortunately been significantly diminished over the past 30 years.

Norway has a rich tradition and an exciting design scene with truly unique potential. Our goal is to put Norwegian design and industry back on the map—and to share it with the world. We know we can’t do it alone, which is why we also facilitate collaboration and conversations about how we can best succeed in bringing new vitality to the design field and the industry. One of the ways we do this is through Design Salon.

Our mission is to create unique and timeless furniture that transforms houses into homes and spaces into experiences. We are committed to being a conscious producer, with a focus on sustainability and craftsmanship in every piece. By sharing the stories behind our designers and cultural history, we aim to foster a deeper connection to the furniture our customers choose. We believe this promotes long-lasting relationships and emotional value, which in turn helps reduce our environmental footprint.

At the same time, we want to revitalize the Norwegian furniture industry, celebrate our heritage, and pave the way for a more sustainable future—where Norway once again stands strong as a design nation.

Matre Stripes

For us, stripes are timeless. They carry an international character and have the power to define a space on their own. Stripes are both traditional and modern. They feel familiar and safe, yet they challenge and bring a sense of playfulness. Because stripes never stop giving, we’ve chosen them as our most important signature. Wherever you find Matre, you’ll also find stripes.

The striped textile has been developed in collaboration with Innvik and textile designer Saga Nilsson. It comes in several colors, and the collection will continue to evolve over time.

Made in Norway

Matre has been awarded the origin label “Made in Norway” by Innovation Norway - a mark of quality that signifies the product is made in Norway and aligned with sustainable principles. We produce at the renowned furniture factory in Vatne, and we are deeply committed to choosing the most local materials and production methods whenever possible. Being able to trace the origin of everything we use is fundamental and critically important to us as a manufacturer.

But sustainability is about more than just production and material choices. It’s about a holistic approach and a care for all life. It means always striving to give more than we take - something that also includes the human and relational aspects.

Sustainability also means nurturing rare craftsmanship and supporting the small local communities where our factories and suppliers are an integral part of a larger ecosystem. And, not least, it’s about taking care of one another;- creating a culture where we can be ourselves and grow as individuals.
